When Zeus and his siblings overthrew their father Cronos, Zeus became the leader among the "Olympians" who live above the Mt. Olympus. When the world was given to Zeus and his siblings, the men of Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon decided to randomly be elected to control each elements: Sky, Underworld, and Sea (fresh and salt). Zeus thus got the sky, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the sea including the oceans and the seas. Poseidon built his palace under the water. Although Poseidon tried to have relationship with Thetis the Neroid, he was prophesized by Themis that any son born to Thetis would be greater than his father, so Poseidon then seek for Amphitrite, daughter of the Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea. Amphtrite, however, detested against Poseidon. One of Poseidon¡¯s messengers named Delphinus convinced Amphitrite to marry him. Poseidon also had similar problems with Zeus of having affairs with other women. Amphitrite punished those women severely. One of the women named Scylla was turned into a monster with six heads and twelve feet by the wrath of Amphitrite. Poseidon was also known for his greed of owning lands. When Poseidon tried to gain Athenians' impressions to control their land, he created a well flowing with sea water. Athena, however, planted an olive tree, which gods believed to be more helpful to the mankind. After losing, Poseidon, of being destructive and short-tempered, caused massive damages to the city by creating storms. Horses were also sacred to Poseidon who first gave them to human beings. He also kept a stable with his sacred chariot horses. |
